Transporting Animals
LAR provides the transportation of animals between buildings at no charge to the investigators. Please email Kurt Jensen or call 263-3860 to make the arrangements needed. The School of Medicine and Public Health ACUC policy number 11.
LAR Vechicle Use
The LAR vehicles (van and truck) can be used by research staff to transport animals by becoming an authorized driver of a UW vehicle. Personnel need to complete a Vehicle Use Agreement and follow the instructions on the form. If approved, [UDDS # A535005] call Kurt Jensen @263-3860 to make arrangements for their use. The approval process can take from 2-3 weeks.
Disposal of Hazardous Waste
LAR can dispose of certain hazardous wastes for you through our contracted service (MERI) at no charge. Currently the waste only includes Infectious waste and animal waste with hazardous zoonotic diseases, and highly hazardous chemicals or drugs. Please call the area supervisor to make arrangements for its proper disposal. LAR does not handle radioactive waste; please call UW Radiation Safety for this service.
Special Services
Euthanasia
Animals that you need euthanized can be performed by the animal technicians at the rate below. Complete a special request order form. Be sure the animals you want euthanized are clearly marked or identified.

Breeding Colony Assistance
We can do all the breeding for your animals or provide suggestions for any problems you are having. You can also have a dedicated animal technician that will perform all care for your colony i.e. matings, weanings, identifications, tissue collection for PCR analysis, and maintaining necessary breeding records. Contact the area supervisor.

Weaning Litters
We can also routinely wean litters for you or when you don't have time. A special charge is levied for unscheduled weaning of litters that must be done due to their age or an over crowded cage.

Medications
If you are not available on certain days, weekends, or holidays to provide the medications that your animals require we can do it for you. Please inform the area supervisor if the medication/drug represents any unusual hazard for personnel performing the injections. Please provide an MSDS for the medication so LAR personnel are fully informed about the medication.

You will be charged for the technician's time, plus supplies. Rates listed below:
Animal Caretakers - $29.90/hour
Veterinary Technicians/Animal Care Supervisors - $40.30/hour
(Charged in 15 minute increments, minimum 15 minutes.)
