University of Minnesota IACUC Guidelines

Policy:
The use of non-pharmaceutical grade compounds in live vertebrate animals is regulated by the USDA Animal Welfare Act Regulations, to which the University of Wisconsin-Madison adheres.  Avertin is a commonly-used non-pharmaceutical grade compound.  In keeping with the regulations, Avertin must be prepared and stored as follows:

  • Sterile filter with 0.2 micron filter
  • Store and use under sterile conditions
  • Store in a dark bottle or foil covered container to prevent breakdown by light
  • Store stock and working stock solutions at 4° C
  • Do not use if the solution becomes discolored or has a precipitate
  • Check pH before each use and use only when greater than pH 5
  • Discard all solutions after 4 months, including the stock solution
  • Label all containers with name and concentration of drug, date prepared, and initials of the person making the solution

Justification for the use of Avertin must be included in the protocol by the Investigators and approved by the ACUC prior to use.

Failure to follow these guidelines may reduce the potency, and therefore efficacy, of the drug, and result in necrosis at the injection site and possible death of animals.

Role of Veterinary Staff and Laboratory Animal Resources
The veterinary staff and LAR will monitor research staff compliance with these guidelines.

Role of Investigator
The Investigator will abide by this policy.  The Investigator is responsible for ensuring all laboratory staff abide by this policy.  Failure to follow this policy may result in revocation of animal use privileges or access to LAR facilities.

ACUC Oversight

The ACUC shall review conformity to these guidelines, and enforce compliance.
